--permission-mode<mode>

Starts the session in a permission mode: default, acceptEdits, plan, auto, dontAsk, bypassPermissions, or manual.

What the documentation does not say

manual is another name for default, the one the interface labels Manual, and it needs v2.1.200 or later; claude --help lists it in place of default, and both values work. The flag overrides defaultMode from settings files.
