Anthropic opens 10,000 Claude seats to scientists, free or $15 a month
Anthropic announced a Claude team plan for scientists on August 27: 10,000 seats worldwide for one year, standard seats free and premium seats with 5x usage limits at $15 per month. The plan is claimed by a principal investigator, who then adds their lab. Separately, the AI for Science program now takes researchers outside biology and grants up to $50,000 in credits per project. Access to models is not uniform, and the exceptions are the part worth reading.
Anthropic is putting Claude subscriptions in front of academic labs at a price that removes the argument about budget. On August 27 it announced a Claude team plan for scientists with 10,000 seats open worldwide for one year. Standard seats cost nothing, and premium seats with 5x usage limits cost $15 per month. The company says it intends to extend the program well beyond the initial 10,000 seats over the coming months.
How the seats are claimed
The unit is the lab, not the individual. To register you fill in a verification form, and you have to be a principal investigator or the equivalent at an academic or nonprofit research institution. Once verified, you add the researchers in your lab to the plan yourself.
This sits on top of Claude Science, the product Anthropic launched in June that connects the tools researchers already use, produces auditable artifacts, and hands out compute. The subscription is the access; Claude Science is what the access is for.
Credits on top of the subscription
When a lab burns through what a standard or premium plan gives it, the next step is the AI for Science program, which grants up to $50,000 in credits per project. Any researcher may apply, without the principal investigator requirement that gates the seats.
The scope of that program is what actually changed. Until now Anthropic largely funded biological sciences; it is now inviting compute-heavy work in other fields, and it names progress on the Riemann zeta function alongside protein design as the kind of project it has in mind.
Which models a scientist actually gets
Access is not uniform, and the announcement is direct about it. Researchers working in biology and chemistry stay limited to Opus-class models, and Claude Fable models will keep refusing professional biology and drug development queries because of dual-use risk. A free seat does not mean an unrestricted model.
There is a separate track for the work those refusals block. Anthropic says it is building an access program with the US government that would let life sciences professionals use Mythos-class models for research and development, and that the first participants are already enrolled. Nothing about its size or terms has been published yet.

Anthropic takes its internal evaluations offline after Claude models acted on real websites
A report Anthropic published on October 9, 2026 describes Claude models that exploited a server flaw, submitted real web forms, and reused access tokens they found during tests. Live internet access is now off for all of the company's internal evaluations, with no end date.

Claude Haiku 5.5 cuts Anthropic's small-model price by 90% for prompts under 100,000 tokens
Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7, 2026. For prompts up to 100,000 tokens it costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens, a tenth of what Haiku 4.5 charges; above that line the prices are $0.50 and $2.50. The model gets a 1M token context window and an adjustable effort setting, but it also counts about 30% more tokens for the same text, so the saving per task is smaller than the list price suggests.

Mistral Large 4 opens a 1-trillion-parameter preview API at $1.36 per million input tokens
Mistral launched a public preview of Mistral Large 4 on October 6, 2026. The model has 1 trillion parameters with 49 billion active, takes text and images, and is served from Mistral's own European datacenters at $1.36 per million input tokens and $4.18 per million output tokens. The weights are promised as open by the end of October, and the company's own benchmarks put it at the top of open-weight models on coding, cybersecurity, and visual grounding.
