Reddit will close its public API in March 2027, and RSS feeds are due to end on November 13

Reddit's developer portal now asks owners of Data API apps to register them, and says access for unregistered apps and users will start to be removed on January 12, 2027. The remaining public API access ends in March 2027. Ars Technica and TechCrunch report that a Reddit staff post on September 30, 2026, also announced the end of RSS support on November 13, 2026, with no replacement for feeds from communities you do not moderate. If your site, bot, or monitoring tool reads Reddit through either path, you now have deadlines.

Reddit is closing the two public paths that outside software uses to read it. The developer portal sets the schedule for the Data API, and a staff announcement reported by two publications sets the date for RSS. The announcement itself could not be opened for this article, so the RSS date is attributed to those reports.

What the developer portal says about the API

The app registration page on Reddit for Developers asks owners of existing Data API apps to register them, and it gives two dates. Starting January 12, 2027, Reddit will begin removing API access for apps and users that have not registered or engaged with the Reddit Developer Platform team. The remaining public API access will end in March 2027. The page names no day.

To register, you need the account information associated with the API app and a personal Reddit account. The page states the purpose plainly: registration lets people recognize apps and tell them apart from human accounts.

What Reddit offers for moving to Devvit

Reddit wants this software rebuilt on Devvit, its Developer Platform. The migration guide says Devvit is now the primary way to develop Reddit extensions. Apps registered by November 30, 2026, may be eligible for a $1,000 porting bounty. The bounty is part of the $1 million Developer Platform App Migration Program, which is aimed particularly at moderation bots and community tools. Apps that migrate also become eligible for Reddit Developer Funds and free hosting, the registration page says.

Reddit also publishes a guide for moving from PRAW, the Python wrapper for the Reddit API, to Devvit Web.

The guide acknowledges that some Data API apps depend on capabilities that Devvit does not yet match one to one. Participants in the program can request these exemptions and features:

  • Broader HTTP Fetch access, for moderation tools that need domains beyond the usual allowlist.
  • External endpoints, which let an outside server call into a Devvit app for long-running jobs or workflows that span several subreddits.
  • App mention triggers, currently in beta, which let an app respond when its username is mentioned.
  • Blob storage hosted by Reddit, in addition to the existing Redis storage.

What the reports say about RSS and Old Reddit

Ars Technica and TechCrunch report that a Reddit employee announced further changes on the r/modnews forum on September 30, 2026. According to the post as quoted by Ars Technica, Reddit will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, 2026. The stated reason is that RSS has become a common route for large-scale scraping and automated abuse. Both reports give the day and month, and the year follows from the date of the announcement.

Moderators who use RSS for alerts are told to switch to Devvit apps such as Discord Relay, which forwards items from a subreddit to Discord or Slack channels. For feeds from communities you do not moderate, the post says there is no replacement.

The same post, according to Ars Technica, says that in the next few months Old Reddit will be limited to logged-in users who have used it in the last six months. Moderators are exempt as long as they are logged in.

What is not confirmed

The developer portal confirms the API dates and the migration program, but it does not mention RSS. The exact day in March 2027 has not been published. The portal also does not say what access a registered app keeps after March 2027 if it does not move to Devvit.

„RSS is now a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse.“

Shopify launches Canvas, where merchants build a store theme by chatting with Sidekick

Shopify announced Canvas on October 1, 2026. It is a workspace that shows every page of an online store side by side and lets Sidekick, the company's AI agent, build or change the theme from a description. Shopify says Canvas renders the store's real code, not a static preview. The Help Center lists it as early access for certain stores, on desktop only, and only for Shopify's own themes and custom themes. A theme edited in Canvas stops receiving theme updates and cannot be downloaded, which matters if you build or maintain themes for clients.
